End of Watch:
Wednesday, November 28, 1973

On Wednesday, November 28 at 7:45 pm, Deputies Richard Lura and Ronald Kalkes were responding to assist Chaska PD.  As their squad crossed the railroad tracks at Zemble Street Crossing in Chaska, a westbound train hit the passenger side of the car.  The train traveling at 18-20 miles per hour, dragged the car 780 feet, stopping near Crosstown Blvd.  Deputy Lura was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee where he died at 11:30 pm.  Kalkes died at the scene.

The officers were the first two to be killed in Carver County.

Deputy Lura was 30 years old, and had worked with the department for a year and a half.  He was hired as an auxiliary deputy on March 11, 1972.  He was survived by his wife, Lois, and three children, Ann, 7, David, 5, and Jamie, 3.

Deputy Kalkes was employed with Carver County for three years having been hired as an auxiliary deputy in August 1970.  He was 23 years old and survived by his father Jerome, step-mother, Ardella, and sister, Mindy.
