Officer Daniel O'Connell

End of Watch : June 17, 1882

St. Paul Police Department

OFFICER DANIEL O'CONNELL
St. Paul PD
Died June 17, 1882

Officer Daniel O'Connell was found shot in the head around 8:00 a.m. at the corner of Summit and Walnut Streets. He had been shot with a 32-caliber handgun. It is believed that he had interrupted a burglary in progress around 2:30 a.m. A woman had told him that two men had been prowling near her home on Dayton Avenue. O'Connell apparently located the two where his body was found. Two days later, two suspects were detained, but were released. A $500 reward was offered for information on the suspects. Later, a man known as "Dago" told police that the suspects in the murder were currently in the Illinois Penitentiary. They were later pardoned from Illinois and sent to Stillwater Penitentiary.

Officer O'Connell was the first St. Paul Officer killed in the line of duty. There is no other information on this case.
