Officer Alexander McLean

End of Watch : February 17, 1899

Moorhead Police Department

OFFICER ALEXANDER McLEAN
Moorhead PD
Died February 17, 1899

When Officer Alexander McLean found the unoccupied house owned by John Hokstad on fire on Western Avenue on Friday night, February 17, he sounded the fire alarm for the First Ward. As he was trying to keep the crowd back and assist the firemen, the chimney collapsed and fell on McLean, killing him instantly. Because there was so much falling mortar and dust, the accident was not discovered until about 20 minutes later. Firemen removed his lifeless body and transported it to the police station. As soon as the doctor arrived, he pronounced McLean dead and had the officer's star and coat removed. The body was then taken to the morgue.

At the time of his death, Officer McLean was a widower with seven small children. His funeral was held at the Fraternity Hall in Moorhead on Sunday afternoon, February 19th, and he was buried in Prairie Home Cemetery.
