| OFFICER AUGUST KOKKO Nashwauk PD Died February 12, 1914 On February 11 at 11:30 p.m., Officer August Kokko was responding to a fight in a boarding house on First Street owned by Marco Barich. As Kokko was taking one participant, Louis Borich, to jail, one of the suspect's friends fired on the officer, hitting him four times. Kokko was ale to return fire and killed Borich and severely injured his brother, Rosa. Officer Kokko and Rosa were taken to the Hibbing Hospital where Kokko died. Officers questioned the friends but had difficulty as they did not speak English and refused to cooperate. They were identified as Marco Barich, Steve Stanich, Steve Hallor, Mike Yaher, Elli Karacus and Mike Sertich. Kokko was able to identify three of the assailants prior to his death. Officer Kokko was 45 years old and married.
