Oficer Frank J. Appel was driving his motorcycle between Grand Marais and Gunflint Lake on the Gunflint Trail on May 8th, 1925. As he was graveling down a hill, too fast for the curve, a front wheel hit a rock and threw him into the ditch and down a 10-foot embankment. His head hit a rock and he was killed instantly. His body was discovered around 5:30 p.m. by Highway Patrolman Dyer Reynolds.

Officer Appel was 42 years old and had worked for the DNR for 3 years. His wife, Elizabeth, and four children, Harold, Leon, Kenneth and Lorraine, survived him. Funeral services were held at his home and he was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
