Officer Joseph Twaddle was returning from Cotton after investigating a game and fish department case on Friday, April 25th, at 7:00 p.m. when he was killed instantly by a Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific railroad passenger train. The accident occurred at the Whiteface crossing, six miles east of Cotton and forty miles north of Duluth. The impact was so great it threw Twaddle from the car and dragged the car 100 feet. His dog and constant companion, "Fritz," was also killed. A witness stated they did not hear the train whistle for the crossing.

Officer Twaddle was a game warden for ten years. He was 52 years old and survived by his wife. His funeral was held at the Fred Olson Mortuary on Monday, April 28th, and he was buried in Oneota Cemetery.
