Officer Donald Sandmeyer, 30, died Tuesday, April 26th, when he accidentally shot himself in the chest while target practicing at his home on Lake Avenue around 5:00 p.m. with a fellow officer, Dale Himes. Himes had just finished shooting at an abandoned vehicle and it was Sandmeyer's turn. Sandmeyer's hand slipped when the .38 caliber revolver hit the car door and turned in his hand and fired, hitting him in the chest. Himes rushed Sandmeyer to Bemidji Hospital where he died around 5:30 p.m.

He had been an officer in Bemidji since January 18th, 1962. He had previously been an officer in Balaton. He was born February 26th, 1936. He was survived by his wife, Dorla, and four children: Ross, 8, Starlyn, 7, Justin, 6, and Bradley, 5. His funeral was held on Friday, April 29th, at Trinity Lutheran Church and he was buried in Evergreen Cemetery at LaPorte.
