Chief of Police Aldean Merlin Sorbo

 Bricelyn Police Department

End of Watch:
Sunday, July 9, 1978

I saw Aldean Sorbo the night that he died. He was directing traffic on a state highway on the edge of little Bricelyn, Minnesota, after their big annual fireworks display ended; traffic was very heavy. The display always attracted a lot of people from all over the area and was quite an event. Aldean had just waved my family’s car out onto the highway from a side street as I recall, and I was watching him out the back window of our car and saw him get struck by another car and then thrown up into the air. We stopped right away and my mom, a nurse, ran over to try and help him. The teenaged girl that hit him fled the scene without stopping and was later located and went to court, although I don’t recall the outcome. I was only about 9 years old at the time but I remember that night clearly.

I am a cop now too, and always remember what I saw that night, and try and use what happened to Aldean Sorbo to keep other officers from getting hit like he did.
