LEMA BRINGS WILLS FOR HEROES TO MINNESOTA

Tim Groshen, Executive Director, Minnesota Bar Assn

and LEMA President Kim Klawiter

Recently the Minnesota Bar Association implemented a new program in Minnesota known as WILLS FOR HEROES.  This program provides free legal services to prepare basic estate planning documents for law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, EMT’s, correctional officers and survivors of the above.  This program has been implemented in five other states (South Carolina, Arizona, Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia.)

LEMA founder and ex-officio board member Jim Crawford was visiting in Arizona last year when he heard about the program.   He brought information about it to the LEMA Board of Directors who in turn contacted the Minnesota Bar Association.  Subsequently the bar association approved of the program and planning began.

If you are interested in this program you may learn more by visiting this website http://www2.mnbar.org/willsforheroes/index.htm

LEMA Board of Directors is happy and proud to announce that St. Cloud Times writer Dave Unze's  "Wills for Heroes" story was picked up by USA Today.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT

                Kim Klawiter, Retired Lieutenant

                    Minnesota State Patrol

On behalf of LEMA, let me personally extend an invitation to you and your family to attend one of our May events. I can't emphasis how important it is that every interested party, survivor and fellow officer participates in the events that pay tribute to our fallen Minnesota heroes. We only ask that one day out of each year, that we all take the time to put aside our chores and obligations, and take an hour or two to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It is but a small price to pay, for so many who have given so much more.

Put yourself in their shoes, and those of their surviving families. Would you not want your legacy to continue and those you left behind recognized and supported for your duty to your community-those you so bravely served? LEMA, its members, board and honor guard team, spend the entire year preparing for and fiscally supporting the memorial events each May. We need your support to make our efforts worthwhile, and our mission complete. Please take the time to support Minnesota Law Enforcement, and help us pay the appropriate respect to all those who have died in the line of duty.

The schedule of events is posted on this website. Please make every effort to attend as many of these worthwhile services that you can. I can personally assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Thanks to MPPOA President Robert Bushman and MPPOA for their continued support and allegiance to LEMA and our fallen heroes. The executive director, president and other board members are ever present and supportive at all of our events. Your leadership is exemplary. Thank you for your continued and valued support.

Technologies Group, MN COPS, MPPOA, Maple Lake Lions Club, North Country Ford,  Unity Tour, Wal-Mart, Coon Rapids and to all the businesses who donated door prizes to the Tim Bowe Memorial Golf Tournament.  (List of names under the golf tournament event).  We appreciate your continued support.

God of our fathers, who by land and sea have ever lead us to victory, please continue your inspiring guidance in this the greatest of all conflicts. Strengthen my soul so that the weakening instinct of self-preservation, which besets all of us in battle, shall not blind me to my duty to my own manhood, to the glory of my calling, and to my responsibility to my fellow officers. Grant to our departments that disciplined valor and mutual confidence which insures success in conflict. Let me not mourn for the men who have died fighting, but rather let me be glad that such heroes have lived. If it be my lot to die, let me do so with courage and honor in a manner which will bring the greatest harm to the enemy, and please, oh Lord, protect and guide those I shall leave behind. Give us the victory, Lord.”

LEMA has received written permission from Marc. A. Turner to  post his poem "Police Week" on the Minnesota Law-Enforcement Memorial Association website
"Police Week" - By Marc A. Turner
Copyright Ó2001 - www.blueautumn.com

The time has now come, for this one week a year.
When we all stop to think...when we all shed a tear.
For all of the Heroes, whose names grace the wall.
And for all of those Heroes, who still answer the call.
Family and friends at the wall they will stand.
With pictures, letters, and love in their hands.
Left at the wall will be displays of their love.
A tribute to those who now watch from above.
They will think of the day their world was destroyed.
A split second in time...causing such a great void.
As they visit the wall, there is great pain in their heart.
But strangely it's there...the healing can start.
As they stand there in awe of this memorial stone.
It is then that they realize that they are not alone.
So many others with stories quite the same.
So many more sharing each other's pain.
Let us all stop and think what this week's all about.
It's for those who sacrifice for us...day in and day out.
And for each name engraved by the stone cutter's knife.
There are hundreds of people...touched by that life.
Although it's just a week, seven days from the year.
It's a lifetime of anxiety, emotions and fear.
For most that will ease when the ceremony ends.
But this week, lasts forever...for family and friends.

Thank you so much for being one of God's Blue Angels.
